Sustainability

Sustainability stands at the core of the hydrogen depleted uranium storage project. The natural uranium concentration of U-235 is 0.71%, which during the enrichment process is increased to approximately 3-5%.

The further processing of the uranic material is followed if it is commercially viable to do so. The safe and secure storage is chosen in case there is not commercially viable to further re-enrich. Urenco’s Tails Management Facility is responsible for the management of the by-product depleted uranium hexafluoride (UF6), commonly known as tails. The tails are converted to uranium oxide (U3O8) during the deconversion process. This form permits safe long-term storage pending reuse or final disposal.

HyDUS will be using Depleted Uranium as the basis as the basis of the metal hydride for the hydrogen storage beds. The hydrogen depleted uranium storage potential is very scalable. And, the commercial practicalities of the bed design will be explored during the Phase 2 Demonstration to optimise for manufacturing, transportation, operation, and decommissioning.
